The Period Project

Ensuring access to menstrual products and normalizing periods through our Period Shirts

A partnership between Changing the Flow & The Community Company

Accessing Menstrual Products

34% of women and girls in Canada have had to regularly or occasionally sacrifice something else within their budget to afford menstrual products.

With the ongoing pandemic and its economic impact, as well as the school closures, access to period products has been disrupted for many students and families in Ontario.

We created The Period Project in partnership with Changing the Flow to ensure access to menstrual products in our community.

Normalizing Periods

58% of female respondents to a Plan International survey said they occasionally or regularly felt the need to lie about being on their period or hide a menstrual product.

Jen Vasic, a Waterloo City Councillor, said it best:

“We shove the pads or tampons or the menstrual cup in our bag as quickly as we can when we leave the store. I think there's a lot of embarrassment around getting your period.”

Periods are normal, so let’s treat them that way.

It’s a monthly thing that happens to roughly half the population. If I feel comfortable talking about it, then I know a lot of other people around me will feel more comfortable as well.

Delivering Periods Packs

We’re working with community groups like Nutrition for Learning to deliver our packs.

Nutrition for Learning operates 52 mobile pop-up locations in our community to provide free, healthy snacks for school children during the COVID-19 closures, and now also offer Period Packs at all locations!

Your purchase of our Period Shirt will ensure that students and families have access to period products.

I can recall it not being easy to access as a student, since I was on a really limited budget. I would have to ask myself: Do I spend my money on these products or do I get myself some food?

Bold, Elegant, Comfy

All 3 of our designs are bold and eye-catching.

Our logos were hand-drawn and embroidered onto our shirts for that extra touch of elegance and style.

Our straight fit shirts (unisex) are manufactured by Bella + Canvas, a company that is platinum WRAP certified, meaning they have the highest standards for employee ethics in production.

Lastly, our shirts are really soft. We went the extra mile every step of the way because we want this to be one of your favourite t-shirts ever.

More about the Shirt!

  • Our three amazing designs were created by Amsa Yaro, a mixed media artist based out of London, Ontario

  • The embroidery was done by a local embroidery company in Waterloo, Ontario

  • Our shirt labels were sewn on by an amazing woman named Lenka, who operates a home clothing alternation business out of Guelph, Ontario

  • The shirts themselves are manufactured by Bella + Canvas; they are the 3413 Triblend Shirts, which is the best t-shirt in their apparel line

  • We selected Bella + Canvas because of their commitment to ethical clothing production; they are sweatshop free, platinum WRAP certified, and manufacture in North America

About Changing the Flow

Changing The Flow is a social enterprise dedicated to the achievement of menstrual equity. We do this through awareness, education, and implementation.

Menstrual Equity is affordable and safe access to menstrual products when and where they are needed. Without it, we sacrifice the health and dignity of people who menstruate.
