I bought the ring and I just couldn’t wait.
My partner was in mid-election season as a campaign manager, which meant he was really, really busy. But I proposed anyway. In the Fall of 2019, and he said YES!
January 2020 comes around and we’ve started planning for our wedding. The ability for Queer and same-sex people to get married is actually very new in Canada. Our marriage is an act of love and also a political statement.
We have both had challenges with being queer. I remember when same-sex marriage was legalized, a student came into my math class and made a joke about it. I was called a fa****, and the teacher laughed along with them.
Our marriage feels like an homage to the lives that we’ve lived and the hatred we’ve experienced. We are here together now, and our love and kindness is good.
We had our wedding fundraiser planned for March 14th, and the week before, businesses started to close and things were being cancelled.
One night, we were laying in bed just looking at each other, and we cried. We cried for a week.
We grieved for the original wedding we had planned in this grand and magical theatre.
In May, we started planning our new wedding. It’s going to be on this gorgeous property which was my partner’s original choice.
Love and relationships don’t have to be grand gestures. It’s about appreciating the little things like having your morning coffee together and going for drives.
As for this year, it’s been a really hard year and I wrestle with it every day. People are angry and our world needs some serious healing.
2020 has been the year of distrust, distrustful of the world around them, the government, businesses, each others, and there are heightened emotions because of distrust, hurt, and anger.
I wish people would take some time for themselves and lift all of the hurt and anger they are carrying around with them.
