The HOPE Tea Workshop

I wanted to have some things prepared that I could communicate with the creators as they were blending, but still allow for a lot of fun and creativity with it.

I jumped on this triangle diagram where you had the base, the secondary flavour, and then the third part which is a more dominant flavour.

I brought all of the tea making equipment, so there was the 30 or so teas that I thought would mix and match well together, and then I brought the tea steepers and spoons. I also provided worksheets, where we had the triangle for blending, as well as tips on how teas will go together and a place to write down their blends.

I remember the first one was really really sour.

And that was because it had a lot of hibiscus, and it also had some dried lemon pieces in it. The dried lemon and hibiscus was just way too much. And that’s something that you learn for next time. It was very difficult to create individual flavours in the first round because everything was so strong, we were so excited.

I liked it when the creators named their blend. It was really spontaneous and they came very easily. It was contrived in many ways and it was directly related to their experience with making the tea.

I really liked Sweetie Pie because it has a lot of rooibos in it.

That one struck me as a really complex tea, there wasn’t too much going on. The cranberry and peach flavours go really nicely with the rooibos and it tasted really cozy. With the peppermint, it smells like something from my childhood. It’s really comforting. It tasted like something I would cozy up with.

The HOPE Tea blends were one of four items in the self-care box created in partnership with HOPE House.
