I’m finding my footing and my confidence again. This is something I’ve been through, but it doesn’t need to define me as a person..

Tiffany’s Story

Tiffany recently left a domestic violence relationship.

I think the biggest adversity people in my situation face is dealing with the trauma afterwards and finding support; there is a ton of shame involved and people don’t want to talk about it. They don’t want to know that you’re still struggling a year after you’ve left, or that you’re dealing with anxiety. Being a single parent, you’re so focused on your child that you have only a little bit of energy left when you’re trying to fix yourself. I’ve been in a court case for my child for 17 months and it’s exhausting.

One thing that I’ve learned, is that it’s okay to not be okay.

I was scared to contact Women in Crisis at first because I really didn’t know anything about them. However, my counselor immediately made me feel safe and created an emergency plan with me and made sure I knew about my different options.

There were no limits to the questions I could ask them.

They helped me find housing so I didn’t have to stay in a shelter. I go to court feeling prepared because of the support along the way. As soon as this court case is finished, I want to start looking for viable work and to get back into the workforce. My future for me is having financial stability and independence again. My vision is to start a business that is a holistic retreat. I want to have a place for people to heal and learn and to holistically expand their life.

Inspiration for my holiday card

Christmas means giving and showing others that I care. My absolute favourite Christmas memory is the birth of my daughter, Willow. I was due on January 11th, but when I was preparing for bed on Christmas Eve, my water broke. She was born on 5:37PM on Christmas day - we completely missed everything to do with the holidays that year.

Her middle name is Sadie, after my grandmother, and my grandmother was a little bird. I always think of her as a sparrow.
